MAPINSERT 3gigabug switch

Here is an AutoCAD Civil 3D/Map 3D bug for the folks using 2009, 2010.

If you are running a 32-bit OS without the 3 GB switch, the MAPINSERT command will run with no problems.

If you are running a 64-bit or 32-bit OS with the 3 GB switch enabled and a 32-bit version of AutoCAD, the MAPINSERT command will not work. The application will crash and images that have geo-referenced information will not import.

Solution for a 64-bit OS with a 32-bit version of AutoCAD:

Unfortunately, there are no solutions for a 64-bit OS running a 32-bit application, but there are a few workarounds.

Workaround 1: Use a different machine that is using a 32-bit OS and a 32-bit application. Insert the image, save, and open the drawing back on the 64-bit OS machine.

Workaround 2: If you know the Geo-referenced location, then you can create lines for the border of the image and use the Align command.

Workaround 3: Use Raster Design to insert the image.

Solution for a 32-bit OS with the 3 GB switch on with a 32-bit version of AutoCAD:

Disable the 3 GB switch, insert the image and enable the 3 GB switch again.

To disable the 3 GB switch open the boot.ini file located on the root of the C drive for Windows XP. Make a copy of the operating systems code and remove “  /3gb” from the code.

Example,

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional” /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3gb” /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3gb

To disable the 3 GB switch for Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will have to use BCDEDIT. Please backup your current BCDEDIT settings before making modifications.

In the Start Menu, in All Programs, in the Accessories program group, right-click Command Prompt, and click Run as administrator. Enter “bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa” and restart the computer.

To enable the 3 GB switch again, enter “bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072” and restart the computer.
