Maximizing Efficiency: AutoCAD 2025 Shows Remarkable Productivity Gains in New Autodesk Study

A recent productivity study (read the full study here) commissioned by Autodesk provides compelling evidence that AutoCAD 2025 significantly outperforms its 2021 predecessor, with users potentially saving up to 72% of their working time across common design tasks.

The study, conducted by an independent consultant, examined six fundamental tasks that designers and engineers regularly perform. Each task was meticulously timed and compared between AutoCAD 2021 and 2025 versions, using identical project materials and an expert-level user to ensure consistent testing conditions.

6 Ways AutoCAD 2025 Saves You Time

Hatch

Hatching along a path can be up to 69% faster.

With the improved HATCH command, the new Path functionality removes the need to draft additional objects to define enclosed boundaries to get a hatch pattern to follow a path. This also removes any necessary remedial action, such as turning off or freezing layers to hide these objects from the final output—saving valuable drafting time and provides flexibility to use Hatch to create highlights that improve readability in your drawings

Smart Blocks: Placement & Replacement

Placing and replacing blocks can be up to 67% faster.

With the Smart Blocks: Placement and Smart Blocks: Replacement (BREPLACE) features, you can save time when working with blocks. Smart Blocks: Placement automatically scales and rotates a block when inserting it into a drawing. Smart Blocks: Replacement helps you quickly swap a block in your drawing with either a recently used block or a similar block that Autodesk AI finds in your library.

Count

Counting blocks can be up to 70% faster.

With the COUNT command, you can quickly count and create AutoCAD tables with fewer steps when compared to the DATAEXTRACTION command. With COUNT, you can count all objects in your DWG, or specify an area within the drawing.

Smart Blocks: Search & Convert

Searching and converting objects into block instances can be up to 93% faster.

The new BCONVERT command can significantly save time when locating unblocked geometry to convert into new blocks—removing the manual, time-consuming process of searching for and converting blocks individually. With the help of Autodesk AI, this workflow also suggests converting these unblocked objects into similar blocks that already exist in your library, further expediting the block cleanup process

Trace

Collaborating on design changes in a DWG file can be up to 64% faster.

With the Trace functionality, you can collaborate directly on DWG files saved on cloud-based locations to create markups. Trace provides a safe space to add changes to a drawing without altering the existing drawing. Each collaborator can create traces in the AutoCAD web and mobile apps, then share the drawing with collaborators to view in the AutoCAD desktop, web, and mobile apps.

Perhaps the most striking improvement comes in the area of object conversion and block management. The study found that searching for and converting objects into block instances is 93% faster in AutoCAD 2025, thanks to the new Smart Blocks: Search and Convert feature. This dramatic improvement transforms what was once a tedious manual process into an intelligent, AI-assisted workflow.

Other significant time savings were documented across various common tasks. Block counting, a crucial function for facilities management and inventory purposes, showed a 70% improvement. The new COUNT command in AutoCAD 2025 streamlines this process, eliminating the need for manual counting or complex data extraction procedures.

The study also highlighted impressive gains in collaborative workflows. Design change collaboration is 64% faster in the 2025 version, leveraging cloud integration and the new Trace functionality. This enhancement particularly shines when compared to the older DWF-based workflow in AutoCAD 2021, offering a more streamlined approach to team collaboration.

Beyond the core study findings, Autodesk’s research revealed additional improvements in AutoCAD 2025 that weren’t directly measured but significantly impact daily workflows. Most notably, files now open twice as fast compared to the previous version – a substantial improvement for professionals working with large, complex drawings.

The introduction of AI-powered features like Smart Blocks: Object Detection (currently in Tech Preview) shows Autodesk’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in CAD software. This feature automatically recognizes and groups objects in drawings, suggesting appropriate block conversions and further streamlining the design process.

It’s worth noting that while these results are impressive, Autodesk acknowledges that actual performance gains may vary based on factors such as user expertise, machine specifications, and specific use cases. However, the consistent pattern of improvement across all tested tasks suggests that most users will experience significant productivity benefits when upgrading to AutoCAD 2025.

These findings make a compelling case for organizations still using older versions of AutoCAD to consider upgrading. The potential time savings, particularly when scaled across multiple users and projects, could represent substantial efficiency gains for design and engineering teams.
