AutoCAD and True Type Fonts

Historically, in older versions of AutoCAD, most CAD Standards would avoid using True Type Fonts(TTF) since they were prone to more issues than the native SHX file fonts.  However, in the last few years, more and more organizations have been switching to using TTF in their drawings, typically using Arial.

On our own projects, we typically adopt the standards of the clients that we are working with and some of them do use TTF.  In-house, we have not noticed any serious problems with using TTF in the last several releases of AutoCAD.  Previously, a drawing containing large amounts of text using a TTF would exhibit slow performance.

As a side note, I would suggest that you avoid using custom TTF in your drawings, since they have to be installed on each machine.  There are also copyright issues with distributing fonts, so please be aware of that.
